We have to start thinking differently about how we deliver health and social care. And we have to take it from the 1948 paradigm and bring it up to date for the 21st century. The challenge will be that, sometimes, we must all be constructively critical about the current system. But criticism must not be the only thing we do. We must offer a better way. And in my view, the better way is about focussing on people; clarifying what we want to achieve and using resources to be able to deliver that. And ultimately, the measure of success is the experience of the citizen.

CCLA Better World Annual Lecture 2026

A celebration of critical thinking and discussion

The CCLA Better World Lectures were established to create a space for thoughtful discussion on the role of investment in shaping a fairer, more sustainable society. Developed in partnership with Marylebone Executive Search and hosted annually at Drapers’ Hall, the lectures bring together leaders from across the charity, investment and not-for-profit sectors to reflect on the challenges and opportunities facing long-term investors, and the impact of these on local communities and civil society.

At their heart, the lectures are rooted in CCLA’s longstanding commitment to responsible investment and stewardship. They provide a platform for leading thinkers to explore how capital can be deployed not only to generate financial returns, but also to support wider social and environmental outcomes.

By convening trustees, executives and sector voices in a historic setting, the Better World Lectures aim to spark informed debate, share practical insights, and inspire collective action in pursuit of a more resilient and inclusive future.
